Observations 2024–
For most of my career in photography, starting in the mid-1960s, I have used medium or large format cameras with the camera most often on a tripod. My studio photographs have been, by necessity, taken this way. At the start of 2024 I purchased a phone with a camera that produces large RAW image files. Working with it is more intuitive and immediate and is an enjoyable contrast to my more gradually considered and produced studio images.
Initially what I found to be quite compelling was the enhanced playful and spontaneous mental space that I experienced using the phone-camera. I enjoyed wandering in the city and suburbs and I found that the products of other creative people were the subject matter that often interested me the most. Shop windows and signs were like magnets pulling at me.
Initially I was totally captivated by this new creative outlet but by the middle of the year my desire to be back in the studio returned and I began to play with new ideas related to photography and drawing. My phone imagery continued, but as the year progressed, I began to internalise the two different approaches.
The interaction between the two may not be easily seen in either body of work. The interaction is something I feel internally, creatively. Although the two ways of working are different, each way of working is now influencing and informing the other and, in a way, they have become one.
These photographs are for sale. If you are interested in a print, contact me and we can discuss the image size, the preferred paper, and the price. This is, of course, true for most of the works on this website.
